Blackberry

The one everyone knows. Thorny, abundant, and almost impossible to get wrong.

Rubus fruticosus — the free berry

Blackberries are the entry drug of foraging. They're everywhere, they're unmistakable, and they're at their best in the one month of the year when everything else is winding down.

How to pick

season late aug → early oct
look for plump, deep black, falls off with a tug
leave red ones (they won't ripen off the cane)
watch out thorns, and the low, dog-height berries

Why they matter

A full bramble is calories for free, and the flavour beats anything from a shop. Eat them raw, or let them become a crumble.
