How to start foraging without a single mistake

People ask me where to start foraging, and the answer is smaller than they want: start with one plant. Not ten, not an app, not a course. One.

Learn one plant

Learn it so well you could recognise it in winter. Where it grows, what it smells like, what its dangerous look-alike is. Blackberry is the classic first — there's no real look-alike and the worst it'll do is scratch you.

Then pick and cook it

Learning ends with cooking. Until you've eaten it, you don't know it. Pick a quarter of what's there, cook it properly, and you'll never confuse it again.
